9 Items You Should Not Be Storing In Your Bathroom Or Near Your Shower

We’re all guilty of storing certain items in our bathroom that we should definitely not be storing. Some of us might be aware of this and might just want to avoid finding a new place for the item while some of us are genuinely blissfully unaware of these blunders. We barely spend a few minutes to an hour in our bathrooms every day, though this has increased recently because of working from home, but it is still important to keep these things in mind. First things first, your bathroom provides the perfect place for bacteria to comfortably make their homes due to the moist environment. If you’ve ever wondered if it’s a good idea to store your toothbrush near your bathroom, then we are here to clear your doubts. Read on to discover how you may be storing certain items the wrong way:

1. Damp Towels

Do you want to be that gross person who keeps using damp towels to dry themselves? You may be too lazy to rewash your towel after taking a shower. But it will have all the germs enough to cause sickness in no time or skin infections. Keeping a used damp towel in your bathroom can be a recipe for bacterial disaster. It will provide the perfect climate and playground for bacteria and germs to breed on it. This will later end up transferring onto your skin and causing infections. Always make sure that you wash your towel once after three uses at the very least and allow it to air dry naturally.

2. Make-Up Brushes

Those who are well-versed in makeup know the importance of keeping their makeup brushes as clean and pristine as possible. It is important to keep your brushes washed, dried, and standing upright in a cup when you are done making use of it. Humid bathroom air can encourage the growth of mold, and its best friend— bacteria. If you leave your product-laden brushes in the bathroom on a daily basis without wiping the residue off, it just accelerates the process. Plus, the damp air in the shower will destroy the bristles.

3. Perfume

If you want to ruin your expensive perfumes, storing them in your bathrooms is the right way to do it. Why you may ask? Well, it’s because the heat present in the bathroom could end up destroying the molecular structure of your fragrance and cause it to smell sour. Therefore, if you want your fruity new fragrance to stay fresh and delightful for a long time, store them in your wardrobe or on your dressing table. You would have noticed, there is always a room temperature check mentioned on the label of every perfume bottle. That is a big reason to protect your expensive fragrances.

4. Face Or Skin Creams

If your skin or face cream hasn’t been sealed completely or tightly shut, the damp air that is present in your bathroom can cause acne-growing bacteria to settle into your cream. This can cause severe skin irritation if you are someone who has super sensitive or delicate skin. The heat produced by your shower each time you make use of it will cause the chemicals and ingredients in your cream to separate. Instead, you can store your creams in your fridge or in a dry drawer that is outside your bathroom. Your dressing table is also a good place to store creams.

5. Jewelry

You would have to be crazy rich to be storing your jewelry in your bathroom or dirt broke and lacking space. Even if you wear your jewelry wherever you go, you must take it off before you get into the shower. The humid environment from your shower can cause your jewelry to get oxidized faster and lose its tarnish and shine. Unless the jewelry you are wearing is made of pure gold, some of your favorite jewelry pieces that are composed of other metals can react badly in the humidity. So think twice before you remove your favorite ring or pendant before taking a shower and leaving it there.

6. Your Bathrobe

Just as bath towels can harbor bacteria and germs, so can your damp bathrobe. While we all want to feel like Hugh Hefner walking around in our red bathrobes, they require some air drying in the sun. If you put on a bathrobe that is already damp and moist from your previous bath, you might as well skip bathing in the first place. Always keep towels and any absorbent material in your bathroom covered. And this includes your toilet paper and other paper towels.

7. Toothbrushes

Flushing your toilet is something that you absolutely have to do, but you can skip storing your toothbrush anywhere close to the toilet bowl after what we tell you. Flushing the toilet can cause a massive burst of germs and bacteria to get spread across your bathroom or toilet. This is why even dentists would recommend that you store your toothbrushes or anything that goes in your mouth very, very far away from it. Though it is very common for us to leave it near the sink or a holder. It is better to keep the bristles protected from germs and keep them in an enclosed closet in the shower. If you don’t have one, your dresser would be good enough.

8. Medication Or Vitamins

Most of the medicines that you purchase from the chemist state that you are supposed to store them in a cool and dry place. This is definitely the polar opposite of the environment that your bathroom provides to it. If you do not store your medicine the right way, it can affect the efficacy of the product and even make it go bad in certain cases. It’s a better idea to store your medicine in a small medical box or a cabinet by your bedside. The same goes for vitamins that are considered a little more durable than medicines and can last for years when taken proper care of. Store these along with your medicines.

9. Nail Polish

The presence of light, heat, and moisture can affect the consistency of those shiny nail paints you just blew your week’s budget on. This combination can activate solvents that are present in the carefully designed formula. So it’s a good idea to store your nail paints in a dark and cool area like your dressing table drawer or wardrobe. You must also ensure that you store your nail paints in an upright position to prevent leakage or drying.

It might seem like this topic is no big deal. But just as you are careful about stuff that you shouldn’t wear in the kitchen and leave your outdoor footwear outside, take care of what you store in your shower. That’s the top priority area in your house to maintain hygiene.  Also, as long as you read the storage instructions correctly and read up on the perfect storage place for the product, you should be fine.
